This reminds me of those multi-level marketing schemes, and friends/family/colleagues who try their best at pushing those products. For a while, I used to mock the folks who participated, but eventually I realized that it wasn't really about the product being sold in the MLM. It was about being a part of something (for better or worse). It's much less fun mocking the desire for connection 😅

Great point! One could argue that the whole libertarian capitalist dream is just MLM. Invest your hard earned dollars in stocks for your retirement, so that you too own a little piece of the means of production.
