Just Us Folks
A story about freedom and fairness.
The letter is why they came west to the valley. It said there would be a new beginning. Starting over appealed to different people for different reasons. Some came for an adventure. Some came for a change of pace. Some came looking for a better future. Some came to escape the oppressive present.
The valley wasn’t much to look at. Just a stretch of land hemmed in by hills, with a wide river cutting through the middle. They came with wagons and tools, empty pockets, and heads full of hope. No one came rich, and no one came poor. When they arrived, they did what the letter told them to do: decide together how to live together.
They circled up by the riverbank, sitting on rocks and crates, coats still thick with dust. No one knew how the next season would treat them, or which patch of dirt would bring fortune or hardship. That’s what made it simple—they made decisions as if they could wake up tomorrow wearing anyone’s boots.
They didn’t know who would strike gold or who’d come up empty. Who would build tall or fall hard. So they made sure the rules fit whoever they turned out to be.
“Everyone should be equally free,” they said. Free to speak, to worship, and to weigh in on decisions that affect the community. As free as one could be without denying freedom to others.
“No two people are alike,” they said. There will always be differences in natural ability and random turns of fortune. So they agreed on fairness to avoid strife. Gains at the top are only acceptable if they help the least well-off, and everyone has a shot to improve their lot. Opportunity shouldn’t depend on who your parents are or where you were born.
They scrawled it all on the back of a worn feed sack and swore to uphold it. Not because they thought they’d need it right away—but because they knew, someday, someone would rise faster than the rest. And when that day came, they wanted to be sure no one rose so high that others were left with nothing at all.
The valley became a town. They staked out plots and put up cabins before the first snow. They built a meeting hall from felled trees. By spring, you could hear hammers at dawn and laughter at dusk. Some proved better farmers, some finer craftsmen, some handier at trading goods downriver—but no one begrudged a neighbor their talent or luck.
They elected five folks to settle disputes, keep the peace, and make sure no one pulled tricks at the market. These council members gathered each month beneath the cottonwoods behind the hall, where the wind through the branches sounded like the river itself. They carried the feed sack charter with them, worn but trusted, a reminder that no one stood above the rules.
The town grew under their simple charter. The biggest farmer hired farmhands, and more crops meant more pay for both. The best blacksmith took on apprentices, and more demand meant they all had more money to spend at the market. The most popular traders needed more boats and crews to run them.
Folks set money aside for themselves and for the unexpected needs of the community. It wasn’t charity; it was just what was right. After all, next year it might be your barn that catches fire, or your crop that fails.
As the valley filled, trouble took root. A few traders who’d done well downriver began deciding who got to speak at council meetings. They didn’t ban anyone outright—just bought influence, hosted dinners, passed around favors. Some voices grew louder, others went unheard.
A handful of merchants, flush with gold, started buying up land and mills, turning neighbors into tenants. Wages fell. Prices rose. The gap widened. Ambition grew. Opportunity itself became a game of closed doors. The merchant families who owned the mills only took on their own kin and close friends. Apprenticeships and bank loans dried up. A child’s birth—not their sweat—began to decide their future.
But the people hadn’t forgotten the feed sack.
With jobs scarce and doors closing, they began meeting under the cottonwoods. First in handfuls, then in hundreds. Neighbors who had grown quiet found their voices once more, and from every corner of the valley came new ideas—some bold, some unsettling, but all born from hunger and hard lessons. The workers banded together. Farmhands and millers, coopers and smiths—they stood side by side, demanding that the merchants honor the promises made long ago.
One rainy morning, the charter came down from the meeting hall wall, brittle and stained. They copied it onto parchment, fine and smooth, so it could stand the years ahead. They added to it too, fresh ink beneath the old lines.
It said the same simple things, but now it carried the weight of law. No longer just a pact between neighbors, the charter became a shield and a lever. It gave the people the strength to push back against the merchant lords.
Those who had hoarded land and coin were made to give some back—not by force, but by rule. The charter set taxes on fortunes and required fair wages for honest work. The merchant families still owned the mills and the fields, but now they paid better, because there was no use hoarding wealth when the community could reclaim its share.
With those taxes, the valley built roads and bridges, dug wells and raised schools. The town hired as many workers as the merchants did—mending what was broken and building what was needed. No one was left to starve in the cold. When a child fell ill, the doctor came whether or not the family could pay. If a storm toppled your roof, neighbors and workers from the town would help rebuild it.
No one called it charity. It was simply what was owed. And though the merchants grumbled, they too prospered, for busy hands and full bellies made for a thriving valley. For a time, things were as they ought to be.
But the merchant families were patient. They had not forgotten how power could be taken, or how it might be won back without breaking a single law. They stopped fighting the charter openly. Instead, they whispered.
They whispered that the town’s new roads and bridges cost too much. That taxes on wealth were draining the valley’s spirit. That folks were growing soft, expecting too much from their neighbors and too little from themselves.
At first, no one listened. After all, bellies were full, and the valley was thriving. But the merchant lords knew the tides would turn if they waited long enough. So they planted seeds—gifts to councilmen, new positions for friends, quiet promises at dinner tables. Over time, the charter’s enforcers became less watchful, more friendly with the merchant class.
The lords hired clever men to print handbills and publish editorials. The old lines from the parchment were called outdated, heavy-handed, even harmful to freedom. They spoke of the town’s successes as proof that fairness had done its work—and was no longer needed. “Why give back when everyone’s already doing well?” they asked. “Why keep paying for someone else’s mistakes?”
Some of the valley folk began to believe it. Some had prospered, buying small shops or farms of their own. They looked at the worn charter and wondered if it was holding them back. Maybe, they thought, freedom meant fewer rules. Maybe fairness could take a step aside.
The council shrank the public works crews. Wages stalled. The merchant lords paid less in taxes. And with each cut, they reinvested—not in the valley, but in their own walls and coffers. Roads began to crumble, schools lost their teachers, and the old safety nets frayed. The doctor stopped making house calls unless you could afford him.
But the lords were careful. They kept the valley just prosperous enough to stop a full rebellion. And when the grumbling grew loud, they pointed elsewhere.
“It’s the newcomers,” they said, “willing to work for less.”
“It’s the elders,” they added, “taking more than they gave.”
“It’s the government,” they warned, “bloated and broken, stealing your coin.”
Neighbors who once stood shoulder to shoulder began to eye one another with suspicion. The merchant lords nodded quietly, then returned to their ledgers.
In time, the people’s confidence cracked. They were still free to speak, still free to gather, still free to vote—but fewer did. What was the point, they thought, when the rules always bent toward the ones with the gold?
The parchment charter still hung on the wall of the meeting hall, but it was faded now, its ink barely legible. Some still believed in it, but fewer each year. The younger folk left the valley for other places. Those who stayed learned to look out for themselves first.
And still, the lords whispered. The valley was working again, they said. The markets were freer. The people were leaner, tougher, more self-reliant.
But beneath it all, barns went unrepaired, wages sank, and debts grew deep. The mills were fewer, the apprenticeships scarcer. The town’s wealth rose higher but pooled in fewer hands. And in the coldest corners of the valley, behind worn doors and shuttered shops, folks began to wonder if they had been left behind entirely.
Soon the valley split in two. Some blamed the poor for dragging the town down, while others blamed the wealthy for hoarding what was left. Neighbors turned on neighbors, each certain the other was the reason their children’s shoes wore thin or why the harvest wouldn’t stretch through winter. The merchant lords fed both sides, whispering that freedom meant picking who to punish, who to cast out, who to blame.
The people argued at market stalls, in taverns, and across fences. Some called for tighter belts, fewer safety nets, and more room for the strong to rise. Others demanded more opportunities to work, lower taxes on their paltry pay, and less interference in their private lives.
Each side swore they were defending freedom. But no matter who won a vote or shouted louder at council meetings, the mills still belonged to the merchant lords, the shops still paid rent to merchant landlords, and the profits still rose like smoke to the highest windows.
Folks fought for far too long over how to divide the scraps before they noticed how the feast at the head table never ended. But they noticed. The lords’ trick had brought them all low—and at the bottom, they were equal. People started noticing that their arguments, started from opposing sides, reached the same conclusions.
“It’s the lords,” they said, “making us work for less.”
“It’s the lords,” they added, “taking more than they gave.”
“It’s the lords,” they warned, “bloated and broken, stealing your coin.”
What began as whispers soon filled the fields, the workshops, and the market square. The blame had been passed around like a bitter cup, but now folks were done drinking from it. People knew that all the lords’ fine talk of freedom was just that—talk.
It spread faster than the lords could stop it. In the mills, at the markets, in the taverns where folks once argued, they now nodded in quiet agreement. Old grudges softened. Fences that had divided neighbors became places where tools were once again passed from hand to hand. The fields, long worked in isolation, filled with shared labor.
No one needed to call a meeting. They simply gathered. In barns, in back rooms, beneath the cottonwoods where it all began. Those who remembered the old parchment recited it for others. The words sounded older now, but truer than ever. Some wept. Some clenched their fists. And some just stood there, stunned at how far they’d all let things slip.
“We knew this once,” someone said. “We can know it again.”
They didn’t speak of revenge, or of tearing everything down. They spoke of mending. Of building something that couldn’t be sold off or whispered away. Something rooted deeper than the lords’ ledgers.
Defiant acts grew like weeds between stones. A blacksmith rehired the apprentice he’d let go. A farmer’s co-op broke the merchant mills’ grip. Old phrases reappeared in chalk on walls and etched into fences: “Each person gets their say” and “No one left behind.”
The council tried to clamp down. But when they passed new rules, a thousand stood silent in the square. No fists. No shouts. But no one moved. The merchant lords, watching from behind their curtains, saw it then—the people had remembered who they were.
At the next council meeting, the square overflowed. The people voted them out, every last one. The first act of the new council was to bring the old parchment charter, brittle and faded, out into the light of day. Under the cottonwoods, folks gathered to rewrite the rules they wanted to live by. They started where they’d started before.
Each person gets their say.
Each person keeps what they earn, but no one is left behind.
Each person gets a fair chance.
This time, they went further. They wrote that ownership is earned by sweat and effort. Worker-run cooperatives took root where monopolies once stood. They wrote that no one should struggle to meet their basic needs. Markets reopened with fair prices. The council shrank again—lean but accountable, its power resting squarely on the people’s shoulders.
And as the seasons passed, the valley flourished. Respect returned. Dignity returned. Freedom returned. Neighbors helped neighbors, not out of pity, but pride. Because when all stand tall, no one casts a shadow on the rest.
The new charter, bound in a leather volume, sat in the hall. Beneath it, carved into the wood for all to see: Freedom is fairness. Fairness is freedom.
